More than 20 people died, mostly children, and more than 300 people were injured on October 7, when an earthquake struck the Hernai region of Balochistan. The quake was 5.9 meters deep with a depth of 9 km, followed by an aftershock of 4.9 meters with a depth of 12 km, according to the US Geological Survey.

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) in Balochistan stated that houses in a 15 km radius of Harnai districts have been destroyed and that Army and Frontier Corps (FC) rescue teams are participating in the relief effort. Some landslides occurred in mountainous areas.

According to initial reports issued by the Civil Administration, more than 100 homes have been completely damaged, and operations are underway to rescue people trapped under the rubble.

As reported by Balochistan’s Minister of Home Affairs, five to six districts were affected on a “significant scale” and data is still being collected.

A medical emergency has been declared at Quetta Civil Hospital as doctors and other emergency medical staff have been called, according to the hospital staff.
