IOM Haiti Earthquake Response, Situation Report (8 October 2021) – Haiti

Situation overview

At 8:30 a.m. (GMT-4) on August 14, a deadly earthquake shook southwestern Haiti just 12 km northeast of Saint-Louis-de-Sud and about 125 km west of the capital, Port-au-Prince. The earthquake severely damaged public buildings and homes, damaged vital infrastructure and roads, cut off access to some areas in the southwest, and forced many to flee their homes for fear that they might collapse, and to seek refuge in evacuation shelters and host families.

Haiti’s Directorate General of Civil Protection (DGPC) reported 2,200 deaths, 12,000 injured, and more than 137,500 homes damaged or destroyed, including essential facilities such as hospitals, schools and churches. Of the 800,000 people affected by the earthquake, thousands have been internally displaced and hundreds are still missing. The provinces of Sud, Grande Anse and Nebes, particularly the towns of Les Cayes, Jeremy and Anse-a-Vou, were the hardest hit, suffering extensive damage and destruction, while in Petite-Trues-de-Nébes the telephone lines that exited the city were brought down. It arrives.

Despite the challenges, on 14 August, IOM deployed its teams to affected areas to assess the situation and join forces with the DGPC and humanitarian partners on the front lines. Since then, the International Organization for Migration has reached nearly 153,000 people. Aiming to provide more assistance to those affected, IOM has published an appeal for US$15 million for activities related to Shelter and Non-Food Items (NFIs), Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM), Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS), and Protection. , as well as early recovery and community stability.

Severe restrictions on humanitarian access and the fragile security situation have significantly complicated the humanitarian response in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. The earthquake, along with pre-existing crises, greatly exacerbated humanitarian needs on the ground. More than 650,000 people still need lifesaving assistance, while funds are also needed for long-term recovery efforts focused on shelter, mental health support, and COVID-19 prevention.
