The confirmed death toll following a pair of powerful earthquakes that struck the northwest of the country last week has risen to 1,719, officials in Venezuela announced, as rescue efforts continue for thousands still missing or trapped under rubble.

Jorge Rodriguez, leader of the Venezuelan National Assembly, said in a speech broadcast on state television on Monday that the number of injured had risen to 5,034 and that 15,866 were now homeless after successive earthquakes of magnitude 7.2 and 7.5.

A powerful aftershock rocked Venezuela earlier Monday during a crucial period for search and rescue efforts, as the US Geological Survey (USGS) recorded a 4.6-magnitude aftershock at a depth of 10 kilometers (six miles), with the epicenter north of Caraballeda on Venezuela’s Caribbean coast.

Rodriguez said there were no immediate reports of additional damage.

“Here we are again, in the street. I don’t know when we will have a moment of true peace,” Concepcion Hernandez, 51, told the Associated Press news agency, while evacuating her apartment building in the Chacao municipality in Caracas after the new earthquake.

International and local rescue efforts are racing against time and are focusing on the northern coastal city of La Guaira, the most affected region in the country and suffering from a long-term political and economic crisis.

Officials believe tens of thousands of people are still missing as rescue efforts continue, involving about 30,000 Venezuelan emergency workers and 2,700 foreign experts.

A crucial 72-hour deadline to rescue trapped victims after a natural disaster expired on Saturday evening. However, some rescue operations on Sunday offered a glimmer of hope. Survival can be extended if people have access to food and water.

“Today we recovered people alive, so operations have not been suspended. We always maintain hope,” interim President Delcy Rodriguez said on Sunday.

Venezuelan authorities say they have received support from 24 countries, sending more than 500 tons of supplies, 2,700 rescue and support personnel and about 86 teams with search dogs.

Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele shared the story of the rescue of 21-year-old Aaron Levy in a collapsed building in La Guaira, writing on X: “This rescue was made possible thanks to the coordinated efforts of rescue teams from Venezuela, Mexico and El Salvador.”

The Venezuelan president said that Levi spent 106 hours buried under the rubble.

Al Jazeera’s Teresa Poe said in a report from Katia La Mar in La Guaira on Sunday that family members had marked several collapsed homes where they were unable to recover the bodies of their loved ones.

“Their relatives are waiting outside to retrieve their bodies,” Bo said.

She added that aid, including water and food, has only just started arriving in the worst-hit areas, as many residents continue to camp outside.

Bo described the disaster as a major test for the international community and for Rodriguez’s new government, which assumed the presidency after the US military kidnapped former President Nicolas Maduro last January.
