Warning of “hard recession” as unemployment benefits rise – BBC News
The chancellor has issued a warning about opportunities for the UK economy as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.
Rishi Suna said the nation was going through a “hard recession” and “it is not obvious that there will be an immediate rebound” once the blockade restrictions are completely eased.
In a recent warning, the latest data showed people claiming benefits for being unemployed in April, the first full month of the blockade, reached its peak since the 1990s.
The Office for National Statistics says 2.1 million people have claimed benefits in the past month, more than 856,000.
Universal credit claims, a relatively new advantage, are for minors who work in the UK. For many job seekers, this is the first time they have had to make a claim and experiment with the new system.
