Temporary transition from earthquake-affected high school to millions of cost

WEST VALLEY VALLEY – Moving students and faculty from the earthquake-affected West Lake STEM Junior High will cost millions, but insurance will cover most of the costs.

After a 5.7-magnitude earthquake on March 18 damaged the West Valley School, Granite School officials decided to transfer students, faculty, and staff to Westbrook Elementary School in Taylorsville. Schools are about 5 miles away.

The school district will transfer about 900 students to the primary school, which will require the purchase of 15 school buses, two drivers for employment, and fuel and maintenance costs, estimated at $ 1.7 million.

While many educational areas in Utah indicate difficulty in filling bus driver jobs, Granite District Spokesman Ben Horsley said 15 retired bus drivers indicated their willingness to work part-time contracts.

Meanwhile, work is underway at Westbrook Elementary School to put a large modular structure in the school for the classroom, and another as a dining hall.

The cost of modular buildings, one of which will be large enough to accommodate 12 classrooms, a bathroom, and an aisle, is approximately $ 1.4 million.

Primary school rooms are usually used as a dining area and gymnasium. Since middle school has sports classes all day long, it needs to use this space full time. Shower and dressing facilities must also be established.

Horsley said work was ongoing to determine whether West Lake Junior High, located at 3450 W. 3400 South, could be saved through renovations or if the seismic damage was too severe to be rebuilt.

Westbrook Elementary School, 3451 W. 6200 South, was scheduled to close at the end of this school year after the school board members voted in late 2019.

Students across the state have not enrolled in school personally since March 13, when classroom learning was suspended to help slow the spread of the Corona virus.
