It’s a technology embedded in the fabric of butterfly wings and peacock feathers – scientists are now hoping that a new approach to creating color-changing crystals will keep us on top of hand washing systems, checking that our food is safe to eat and even predict earthquakes.

An international team of scientists led by researchers from Surrey and Sussex universities has developed photonic crystals that are able to change color when changes in temperature, light, tension, and other external forces are exposed.

With changes that can be seen with the naked eye, the intense green crystal color can change to blue upon stretching or become transparent after being heated – with potential implications for healthcare, food safety and security systems such as fingerprint scanners, according to the study published in the Journal of Advanced Functional Materials.
