BREMERTON – Rebuilding a recently completed $ 38 million building inside the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard is a potential harbinger of future construction there, but includes a reference to the past.

The structure known as Building 435 includes brick construction and a hidden Art Deco façade, an architectural touch dating back to the Great Depression and a worthy part of the Landmark National Historic District designation.

The brick enclosure known as 435 was always home to a range of shipbuilding services, including the original firehouse, constructed in 1935. Seven years later, in the midst of World War II, a three-story structure was added to the north. Over time, the building included storage areas, cafeteria, offices and more.

The fire station was originally under the command of a Marine Corps under the command of a civilian fire chief. But after the attack on Pearl Harbor, a fully civilian administration was established and a new fire station was built on the western end of the shipyard, according to documents provided in the National Archives. After that, the external mechanics took over a large part of Building 435, as they were expelled from their previous home, necessary to expand the facilities of the pipe store.

At the time of its original construction in the middle of the Great Depression, the Bremerton Shipyard was receiving relief funds thanks to the legislation of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal.
