The annual Great ShakeOut Earthquake drill will take place on October 21 at 10:21 a.m. local time, and FEMA’s District 5 office wants everyone to fall, cover, and stop, while learning important steps for staying safe during an earthquake.

Drop (or Lock): Wherever you are, get down on your hands and knees and hold onto something sturdy. If you use a wheelchair or seat walker, make sure your wheels are locked and remain seated until the shaking stops.

Cover your head and neck with your arms. If a sturdy table or desk is nearby, crawl under it for shelter. If there is no shelter nearby, crawl next to an interior wall (away from windows). Only crawl if you can get to better cover without going through an area with more debris. Stay on your knees or bend over to protect vital organs.

Wait: If you are under a table or desk, hold one hand and be prepared to move with it if it moves. If you are sitting and unable to fall to the ground, bend forward, cover your head with your arms and grab your neck with both hands.
