Brett Hume: McAuliffe defeat will be seen as a ‘political earthquake’ for midterm Democrats

Brett Hume, chief political analyst at Fox News, said Tuesday that the defeat of the Democratic candidate for governor of Virginia, Terry McAuliffe, could mean a “political earthquake” for Democrats heading into 2022, and that the candidate is “afraid of competition.”

President Biden joined McAuliffe on the campaign trail earlier on Tuesday as polls showed the Virginia gubernatorial election close between the former governor and Republican candidate Glenn Youngkin.

Hume said Biden’s visit represented a last-ditch attempt to drag McAuliffe over the edge as panic spreads among Democrats in the deep blue state.

“This is a very frightened and frightened candidate, and for good reason,” Hume told Tucker Carlson Tonight.

Hume pointed to McAuliffe’s repeated false statements about the number of coronavirus cases and hospitalizations, which earned him the Four Pinocatius of The Washington Post.

“He’s made one big mistake after another, not least by his assertion just a few weeks ago that he didn’t want parents to tell school boards what to teach children. This is a view widely shared in the Democratic Party but not widely shared across the body politic as a whole.” Hume said.

“The Independents don’t like him and the Republicans obviously don’t like him either. He’s been a major political wonder as I think I’ve seen in a long time, so he’s in trouble.”

Hume added: “He might pull this off—Virginia is a very blue state, but he’s worried, he’s afraid, and the president’s presence there is just a recent semblance of that.”

Former President Barack Obama joined McAuliffe in Richmond the day before, describing Youngkin’s concerns about critical race theory as “falsely fabricated culture wars” and “false anger.”

Hume said the Democrats are sending the big campaign guns in favor of McAuliffe because “if he loses, it will be seen as a political earthquake, and if the Democrats aren’t really worried about what will happen to them in 2022, they will. They’re afraid if that happens.”
