Carlos Fierro and Kid Coyle scored with an assist to lead the San Jose Earthquakes to a 4-3 victory over Real Salt Lake on Saturday in Sandy, Utah.

All-time leading scorer Chris Wondolowski put San Jose just before the break, while Jackson Yoel added a second-half key goal to help the Earthquakes capture three points.

San Jose (10-13-10, 40 points) recovered from an early one-goal deficit and then had to hold on to secure victory.

Albert Rusnak scored twice for Real Salt Lake and Michael Chang added a late goal in a furious run to no avail. RSL (13-13-6, 45 points) would have had a chance to grab a playoff point with the win.

Rusnak put Salt Lake on the board in the ninth minute. He shot the ball to Damir Krilac at the top of the penalty area and then Krillach released it to Rusnak when he cut it into the 6-yard area. Rusnak unleashed the right foot in the middle of the goal to gain a 1-0 advantage early on.

Fierro equalized in the 37th minute after converting a low cross into the penalty area into the perfect equalizer. Unmarked Fierro seized the ball near the goal’s mouth and, without breaking his step, hit him with the left foot into the open net.

San Jose took the lead in the second minute of first-half stoppage time on Wondolofsky’s goal, the 170th of his career. He climbed the ladder after a corner kick and a cross from Fierro inside the back post to lead 2-1 for the earthquakes.

Coyle split a pair of RSL defenders and fired a right post just as he crossed into the 6-yard box to give Earthquakes a 3-1 lead in the 69th minute. Coyle fired a key locking goal in the middle of the penalty area in the 79th minute.

Salt Lake scored one goal in the 85th minute when Zhang passed the ball into the near post. RSL added another goal in the third minute of stoppage time when Rusnak scored inside the near post outside the 6-yard area.
