Out-of-state students face Southern California earthquakes – Annenberg Media
Earthquakes may be a common occurrence for Californians, but with less than 65% of students from other parts of the country and the world, not everyone is familiar.
When a 3.6-magnitude earthquake struck about five miles from the center of the University of Southern California campus on Sunday, October 24, these students expressed concern about recent earthquake activity.
Unlike other natural disasters, earthquakes cannot be predicted. Caroline Silva, a sophomore in computer science and business management from Florida, said she can prepare at home for natural disasters, like hurricanes.
“You always see them coming in. We put up all the windows and store food in case trees fall or there is a flood,” Silva said. “The thing that really scared me about earthquakes is that you can’t see when they’re going to happen.”
For Jason Ha, a freshman in mechanical engineering from Louisiana, the earthquake was the first he had ever felt. However, the slight tremor and a 4.4-magnitude earthquake on September 17 did not bother him.
“Those were relatively small earthquakes, so I didn’t feel them as much,” Ha said. “But some big earthquakes, I’m not quite sure how prepared I am for that.”
Small earthquakes are a common occurrence in Los Angeles, however, for many, the “big earthquake,” a magnitude 7.8 (or greater) hitting along the South San Andreas Fault, lies in the corner.
Professor John Vidal, who specializes in seismology, or the study of earthquakes, explained that the reason Southern California experiences so many earthquakes is because it is home to the San Andreas Fault System, which he described as a complex.
“[Southern California] It is one of the most active places [for earthquakes] In the United States,” Vidal said. “Maybe only Hawaii and Alaska have more earthquakes than we have here in Southern California.”
Ha said that although the University of Southern California has provided resources to help students prepare for earthquakes, such as the Great Shakeout Drill on October 21, they haven’t been enough.
“I wouldn’t say the USC fully prepared us for an earthquake,” Ha said.
Annenberg Media reached out to USC for comment, but did not receive a response in time for the article’s publication.

Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price.
