Mild tremors shook parts of Visakhapatnam on Sunday morning, prompting people to flee their homes in several districts of the city in Andhra Pradesh.

According to reports, residents of high-rise buildings and apartments have rushed from their homes in Sagar Nagar, MVP Colony, Bida Walter, Waun Town, Akyayapalm, Kancharapalim, Nad, Gajuaka and Vipsinta districts of Visakhapatnam.

The National Center for Seismology said it was an earthquake with a magnitude of 1.8.

The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) tweeted asking people to take “precautionary steps” after the tremors were reported at 7:13 am.

“Dear fellow citizens, I felt traffic around the city around 7.14 am today. Precautionary steps are required to avoid the potential earthquake impact,” GVMC said in a tweet on Twitter.

“In the event of an earthquake like the experience, get out of homes and stay in open safe spaces,” she wrote, too.

Several social media users tweeted that they felt the tremors that lasted for a few seconds and heard an “explosion-like” sound in Visakhapatnam.

“Okay. What was that?! I felt something like an earthquake after a strange loud sound,” one user tweeted.

Another user posted on Twitter, “Hat an earthquake around 7:15 AM, some sounds too.”

Some also reported slight tremors.
