CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KFVS) – While the 4.0-magnitude earthquake did not cause any damage, it is a reminder that earthquakes are common in this region.

Plus a reminder why you should be prepared for the earthquake.

“You can expect between 300 and 400 earthquakes per year in the seismic zone,” said Jeff Grunwald, director of the Madrid Historical Museum.

He said we don’t feel the majority of earthquakes in the area.

“In a typical year, you’d have 15 to 20 vibrations actually shaking the surface strong enough to feel like they’re coming from the new Madrid earthquake zone,” Grunwald said.

Grunwald points to the five states that have fault lines associated with the earthquake zone of New Madrid.

“Kentucky and Tennessee are on the other side of the river plus Illinois and then Missouri and Arkansas,” Grunwald said.

Mark Winkler, director of emergency management for Cape Girardeau County, also uses a lot of maps to track recent earthquakes.

He said disasters can happen at any moment… which is why it’s important to have a plan ready.

“…Be aware of your surroundings, know if you are in your office and know that your office knows very well where you feel safe places will be,” Winkler said.

“Be aware of some sturdy desks or materials that you can crawl under these kinds of things.”
