It’s not a trip to the center of the Earth or 20,000 leagues under the sea.

But scientists have embarked on a journey that seems to inspire Jules Verne’s novel as they search for the secrets of the Earth’s inner layers.

A team led by the Australian National University will climb underwater mountains more than the Himalayas to collect data from the most violent earthquakes on Earth in research that could help predict whether tsunamis will hit Australia and New Zealand.

The team left New Zealand and arrived at Macquarie Island in the Southern Ocean on Saturday to retrieve 27 instruments – the seismometer – from the ocean floor that collected data from underwater earthquakes last month.

Collecting them would be easier said than done, says lead scientist on the team Professor Hrvuje Tkalcic.

Some of them lie in the world’s deepest underwater mountain range at depths of 5.5 kilometers in a remote area known as the Macquarie Ridge, halfway between New Zealand and Antarctica.

“Putting it together would be a story in itself,” Professor Tkalcic told the AAP.

“If you put Macquarie Ridge anywhere in the world on dry land, it would be the steepest slope, bypassing the slope of the Himalayas, the Alps, or the Alaskan mountain range.

“It could only take six hours to collect one, even two hours just to get to the surface.

“But it depends on the weather and the current. It’s in an area with the strongest current on the planet, the Antarctic Current.”

Some of the world’s largest underwater earthquakes occur as one oceanic plate descends under another, a process called subduction.

But the area near Macquarie Island – where the Australian and Pacific plates meet – is not known as the subduction zone, which has left Professor Tkalcic puzzled as to why massive underwater earthquakes occur there.

“Some of the largest underwater earthquakes that are not associated with known subduction zones have occurred in the Macquarie Ridge,” he said.

“Actually there was the biggest such earthquake of the 20th century and we don’t know why.”

Professor Tkalcic hopes their data will not only solve this mystery but also help predict future earthquakes and – as a consequence – tsunamis that may affect coastal populations in Australia and New Zealand.

The team is expected to return on the New Zealand research vessel RV Tangaroa to Wellington on December 6, and data collection is expected to take weeks.
