San Andreas Fault – WorldAtlas

The San Andreas Fault is a major continental shift boundary located in the westernmost part of the North American continent and forming the boundary between two major tectonic plates: the North American Plate on the eastern side and the Pacific Plate on the western side. Because the Pacific plate slides laterally over the North American plate in a northerly direction, geologists classify the San Andreas fault as a “slip fault,” and tectonic movements along the San Andreas fault often cause intense earthquakes. The San Andreas Fault is one of the largest and most widely studied faults that extends in a northwest direction for more than 1,300 km from the northern edge of the Gulf of California through the western part of the US state of California and passes into the Pacific Ocean near the city of San Francisco. A large portion of Californians live near the San Andreas Fault.

The geography of San Andreas fault of San Andreas drawn on the map.

The San Andreas fault is divided into three main fault sections: the northern, central and southern segments, each with distinct characteristics with different degrees of seismic hazard. Over geological time, the movement of the North American and Pacific tectonic plates relative to each other was about 1 cm per year; And since the beginning of the 20th century, the plate movement has been 4-6 cm per year. The northern part of the San Andreas Fault extends from Hollister through the Santa Cruz Mountains and then extends to the San Francisco Peninsula moving offshore at Daly City near Mussel Rock. It returns ashore at Bolinas Lagoon and then travels back underwater through Tomales Bay, where it separates the mainland from Point Reyes Peninsula and back ashore at Fort Ross. There are several important “sister faults” in this area around San Francisco Bay that run parallel to the San Andreas Fault and that can also cause devastating earthquakes. The northern part of the San Andreas Fault then continues above ground where it forms a linear valley and returns offshore at the coastal city of Point Arena. Here, the underwater northern part extends along the coast until it reaches near Cape Mendocino, where it turns west and ends at the meeting point of the North American, Pacific and Gorda tectonic plates referred to as the Mendocino Triple Junction.

The central portion of the San Andreas Fault extends from the unincorporated community of Parkfield to the City of Hollister in the northwest direction. Studies have revealed that while the part of the fault running through the Parkfield and the southern section of the fault is subject to earthquakes, the central part of the fault exhibits a non-seismic creep. Geologists believe that seismic creep is a phenomenon in which a fault continually slips but does not cause any earthquakes. The southern part of the San Andreas Fault begins near Bombay Beach on the Salton Sea and extends along the southern foot of the San Bernardino Mountains. Here, you cross the Cajon Pass and continue in the northwest direction along the foot of the northern San Gabriel Mountains. Then the fault continues again in the northwest direction and runs along Elizabeth Lake Road and reaches the town of Elizabeth Lake. The fault then begins to bend in a northern direction and forms the “Great Bend” as it passes through Tejon Pass and the unincorporated communities of Gorman and Fraser Park. In the northwest part of Frazier Park, the fault runs through the long, treeless Carrizo Plain. The southern part of the San Andreas Fault is capable of causing frequent earthquakes of magnitude 8.1 that damage billions of dollars of property in addition to the loss of many lives.

Geology of the San Andreas Fault The San Andreas Fault passes through the Carrizo Plain in southern California.

Geologists believe that the San Andreas Fault began forming about 30 million years ago, in the middle of the Cenozoic Era. During this time, the spreading center that was located between the Farallon plate and the Pacific plate began to reach the subduction zone. However, due to the difference in relative motions between the Pacific and North American plates as well as the Farallon and North American plates, the spreading ridge eventually began to decline. Movements along the San Andreas Fault are believed to be due to spreading under the eastern Pacific Rise. Northward movement along the San Andreas Fault led to the creation of the Baja Peninsula and the subsequent separation of the peninsula from mainland Mexico.

In 1895, the northern part of the San Andreas Fault was discovered by Andrew Lawson, who worked as a professor of geology at the University of California, Berkeley. Sir Andrew named the rift “Laguna de San Andreas” – a small lake that was located in the valley formed by the rift, south of San Francisco. Tectonic movements along the fault led to several severe earthquakes including the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. While reviewing the effects of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, Sir Andrew Lawson discovered that the San Andreas fault extended south into the southern part of California. In 1953, American geologists Thomas Wilson Dibble Jr. and Mason Hill proposed in a research paper about several large-scale lateral movements along the San Andreas Fault. Seismologists working near the single community of Parkfield have revealed that the San Andreas Fault in this region regularly produces a 6.0-magnitude earthquake every 22 years. Due to the predictable nature of seismic activities, the Parkfield District has become one of the world’s most important sites for the study of earthquakes.
