Coronavirus India: migrant workers fleeing cities in death and despair – BBC News
The drastic measures to stop the spread of the coronavirus in India meant closing most factories and businesses, leaving millions unemployed.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi called on companies to continue to pay employees, including salaried workers on a daily basis.
But that didn’t happen, and most of the workers were left with little money and food.
With no chance of income, they made long journeys to return to their villages. Some managed to get transportation, but those who couldn’t made it hundreds of miles.
And some of them never did it at home because of fatigue or death in accidents.
BBC reports Vikas Pandey and Anshul Verma.
