Earthquakes shake residents in north central Kansas

WICHITA, Kansas (KSNW) – The Kansas Geological Survey reported 13 earthquakes of magnitude 2.0 or stronger in the Salina area on Wednesday.

KSN News began receiving reports from Saline County viewers that they felt the strongest earthquakes around 7:45 a.m., and other viewers reported feeling the quake as far as Wichita, Russell, McPherson and Great Bend.

According to the United States Geological Survey, the earthquake had a magnitude of 4.3 and was centered about four miles south of Gypsum in Saline County.

Private Ben Gardner tweeted that the earthquake shook his patrol car while he was sitting in the middle of the road. The KSAL News agency in Salina reported that the quake was strong.

Several hours later, around 2:25 p.m., the USGS reported a 3.1-magnitude earthquake close to the first. The USGS website only shows the strongest earthquakes.

The Kansas Geological Survey (KGS) reports earthquakes of magnitude 2.0 or greater. Shows 13 earthquakes Wednesday, all in the southeast corner of Salina County. It has slightly different magnitudes than stronger earthquakes. Instead of 4.3, the KGS says the earthquake at 7:45 a.m. had a magnitude of 4.2. The USGS says the 2:25 p.m. quake was 3.4, stronger than the USGS measurement of 3.1.
