No injuries were reported after a small earthquake in British Columbia early Friday

A small earthquake struck off the coast of British Columbia early Friday morning.

Seismology Canada says the 3.8-magnitude quake occurred at 4:13 a.m. in the Strait of Georgia, about 40 kilometers southwest of Vancouver.

Some British Columbia residents have taken to social media to report being awakened by mild shaking lasting 15 to 20 seconds, but the agency says no damage has been reported and nothing is expected.

This was the forty-fifth major earthquake that the agency announced in the province this year.

Natural Resources Canada says the area where Friday’s earthquake occurred is a seismically active area, with about 400 earthquakes occurring each year between Vancouver Island and Seattle.

The US Geological Survey, which measured the same quake with a magnitude of 3.6, says the quake occurred at a depth of 17.3 km.
