On December 16, the Peruvian National Civil Defense Institute (INDECI by its Spanish acronym) reported that a state of emergency had been declared in some areas as a result of the damage caused by the 7.5-magnitude earthquake that affected the northeastern region of Peru on November 28. There are currently 94 areas in Amazonas, Cajamarca, Loreto and San Martin provinces that are under a state of emergency. According to the Capacity Assessment Project (ACAPS) report, 8,864 people were affected, including 5,100 people in need of humanitarian assistance, 13,200 people had their homes destroyed or uninhabitable, and 27 kilometers of roads were destroyed or affected by the earthquake. As of December 14, the earthquake has caused 1 death and 17 injuries. In total, 5,100 homes, 518 schools, and 71 hospitals were damaged. Assessments indicated that at least 300 families have not yet received humanitarian assistance due to damaged roads or due to flooding caused by the Otkobamba River.
