Northern California earthquake: Magnitude 6.2 earthquake shakes state

The earthquake occurred off Cape Mendocino near Humboldt County and was felt as far away as San Francisco and Chico, California.

“It was slow at first, but then it really started,” Humboldt County Sheriff William Honsal told CNN. “We haven’t seen an earthquake like this since 2010.”

Humboldt County emergency responders are assessing the damage but have not reported injuries or catastrophic damage. Honsal said some minor damage was found in the buildings, including broken glass.

Pictures from a small grocery store in Ferndale, just north of the epicenter, showed broken wine bottles, fallen bread, cereal and other items in the aisles.

“We have a lot of mess,” store owner Renjit Singh told CNN, estimating the damages at $15,000.

Most dry goods can be salvaged, but not wine. Several broken bottles were expensive wine and champagne in stock for the holidays.

Singh was surprised by the duration of the shaking. “I hadn’t felt one for a long time before that,” he said. None of his nine employees were hurt.

Early warning system work

The California Earthquake Early Warning System was working with those who signed up for alerts on their mobile devices. Hunsal said he got the warning about 10-15 seconds before he felt the earthquake.

The agency wrote on Twitter that the state’s office of emergency services was “actively monitoring” and “closely coordinating with local partners in the area to protect communities from any secondary effects.”

Humboldt County is sparsely populated, with a population of approximately 135,000 people spread over an area of ​​more than 4,000 square miles. The area is located near the California/Oregon border, about 270 miles north of San Francisco.
