Mystery over ‘loud bang’ in El Paso as Texans raise blast fears and report ‘shake like earthquake’

Area residents reported a loud bang in El Paso on Thursday that sounded like an explosion and shook homes, according to local reports.

First responders started getting calls about the mysterious boom around 2 p.m. local time.

After an initial period of confusion, local ABC affiliate KVIA reported that the explosion was caused by an explosion at a construction site in neighboring Mexico.

The Juarez news agency, El Diario, reported that the explosion occurred on a hill along the Camino Real, where a construction company was working to extract materials with explosives.

Mexican civil protection officials told El Diario that nearly 20 nearby homes were damaged, but there were no reports of injuries or deaths.

The noise baffled El Paso police and fire rescue, and neither agency was immediately able to determine what caused it.

The El Paso Police Department said, “The El Paso Police Department has received reports of a bang or a loud explosion. The location or cause of this has not been confirmed at this time and the El Paso Police Department is still looking into the situation.” Tweet.

The big boom reverberated in El Paso, the Lower Valley, Socorro, Horizon City, and other points in East El Paso County, according to local news station KTSM.

“We have multiple calls reporting loud bangs and we have multiple units checking in all the different locations reported by callers,” Enrique Doñas Aguilar of the El Paso Fire Department told the US Sun.

“However, we haven’t found anything yet. It’s also the possibility of it happening on the other side of the border. We’re still investigating.”

Duenas Aguilar said the fire department is looking into whether the noise came from Juarez, but they weren’t able to confirm that immediately.

Police and fire officials have contacted local utility companies and refineries in their investigations into the boom.

The noise caused a flurry of reactions on social media, with many people wondering if it was a doi or another noise from the military.

One woman shared a video from Ring’s camera that she thought might have picked up the noise.

Another person posted, “Has anyone else felt a big boom or house shaking right now? I’m in East El Paso.”
