M6-1 earthquake strikes south of Tokyo, no casualties reported

A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 struck near the Ogasawara Islands in the Pacific Ocean, south of Tokyo, on Tuesday morning, but there were no reports of injuries or serious damage to infrastructure, authorities said.

The earthquake occurred at 6:08 am, registering 5 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale of 7 on the island of Hahajima, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency. The agency said there was no threat of a tsunami.

In the aftermath of the earthquake, the government established a liaison office in the Prime Minister’s Office to collect information.

The agency said the quake also registered 4 on the seismic intensity scale on the island of Chi Chi Jima.

The focus was in the waters near the island at a depth of 77 kilometers.

The agency initially said the quake had a magnitude of 6.3, but was later revised down.

“There was a strong tremor in my sleep and I jumped out of bed, but the tremor stopped shortly after,” said Mamoru Kizaki, an official with the Ogasawara village office.

An official at the Meteorological Agency warned of more earthquakes up to 5 on the intensity scale over the next seven days, especially in the next two or three days.

The two islands, located about 1,000 kilometers south of the Japanese capital and administered by the Tokyo metropolitan government, are the only two inhabited areas in the Ogasawara chain except for Iwoto Island, where the Japan Self-Defense Forces are stationed.
