Thirty earthquakes under the summit of Mount Ruapehu in two weeks

An unusual group of earthquakes has struck under the summit of Mount Ruapehu since December last year, causing minor volcanic disturbances.

GeoNet said in a statement that a sequence of tectonic earthquakes has been recorded under the summit area since December 31, 2021.

“So far, there have been at least 30 distinct earthquakes in this sequence.”

GeoNet says these earthquakes are unusual compared to historical records.

“The number of earthquakes with centers closely confined to the summit region is unusual,” it says on its site.

“While these earthquake clusters are uncommon, none of our monitoring data indicates that the volcano is showing increased levels of activity.”

GeoNet will conduct a scheduled gas flight to experience Ruapehu’s Crater Lake this week.

Ruapehu’s Volcanic Alert Level remains at 1 which GeoNet says reflects the level of volcanic disturbance.

“Volcanic Alert Level 1 indicates that the initial hazards are those expected during volcanic disturbances: discharge of volcanic steam and gas, earthquakes, landslides, and hydrothermal activity.”

GeoNet says that GNS Science and the National Geohazards Monitoring Center will continue to monitor Mt Ruapehu closely for any further changes.
