The Gwadar earthquake has raised tsunami fears along the coastal belt of Indus Makran

KARACHI: An earthquake measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale jolted the city of Gwadar and surrounding areas on Tuesday night, raising fears of a tsunami along the coast of Balochistan and Sindh.

According to the National Seismological Center, the earthquake hit Gwadar at 2:22 am. The epicenter of the earthquake was 50 km from Gwadar in the Arabian Sea, at a depth of 20 km. No loss of life or damage to property was reported so far.

Emphasizing the need to take preventive measures, the director general of the department, Muhammad Riyad, said that his department issued warnings several times of a strong earthquake in the subduction zone in the Makran region. He said any strong earthquake in the area could cause a tsunami.

Director of the National Tsunami Warning Center, Amir Haider Khan, said the threat of a tsunami looms over the coastal areas of Sindh and Makran. He stressed that the Makran subduction zone is similar to a nuclear weapon in the sea and could explode at any time.

He asserted that the coast of Sindh and Makran had already faced devastation in 1945 when a powerful tsunami caused by an earthquake occurred in the Makran subduction zone. Nearly 4,000 people were killed in the coastal areas of Makran due to the tsunami.

After 1945, the subduction zone is now active as it has completed its normal time scale, the official warned.

He said Gwadar and Makran would be the most affected areas if any earthquake triggered a tsunami in the Arabian Sea, adding, “The tsunami can also hit Karachi in a very short time.”
