San Jose Earthquakes Leases Aussie Buddha with 8th Choice

On Tuesday, young Stanford men’s soccer team forward Osenyi Boda officially joined the professional ranks when he was named by the San Jose Earthquakes as the eighth pick in the 2022 MLS SuperDraft Championship.

Boda leaves Stanford University after a three-year, albeit brief, career on the farm. In his new season, the Burkina Faso native started every game and scored five goals with five assists. His efforts earned him a Pac-12 Freshman of the Year as well as points in Top Drawer Soccer Best XI Freshman First Team and All-Pac-12 First Team.

He then missed all of his sophomore season due to injury. Last fall, he returned to lead the Cardinal’s frontline, ending the season with five goals and nine assists as Stanford uncharacteristically missed the post-season. He was named again in the All-Pac-12 first team.

One of the most dangerous strikers in college football, Boda signed the Adidas generation contract last week. This type of contract is awarded to promising lower-class students who have decided to give up the remainder of their college life and join MLS. Only eight players have been selected for this year’s Adidas Generation Contract.

The Stanford program will also see another Bay Area player stay with Boda, with senior midfielder Will Richmond signing a local contract with the Earthquakes on Monday. Richmond grew up at Earthquakes Academy, which made him eligible to sign a contract with them right after college rather than go through the draft process. In his four years with the Cardinal, Richmond scored 10 goals and 11 assists, helping Stanford win the PAC 12 race twice. He co-led the team to help his junior season and was named to the All-Pac-12 first team in his last two years at Palo Alto.

Coach Jeremy Jean’s program continues to bring out talent, as this is the seventh consecutive MLS SuperDraft in which a Cardinal player has been selected.
