The eastern rand experienced a tremor of magnitude 3.5

A localized 3.5-magnitude earthquake was recorded in the East Rand and was felt around Johannesburg on Tuesday morning.

The Earth Sciences Council confirmed the earthquake, which was recorded by the South African Seismological Network.

The quake was felt by people at about 06:33 and the epicenter was in Westonaria, about 51 kilometers southwest of Johannesburg.

In October last year, an earthquake of similar magnitude was recorded in the East Rand.

News24 reported at the time that a local 3.1-magnitude earthquake was recorded at around 11:00 on October 27.

Earlier in the year – in July – residents in some parts of Gauteng also experienced an earthquake with a magnitude of between 3.5 and 4.2 that shook the area.

The quake was felt across the county just after 06:30 and lasted a few minutes, News24 reported.
