UK residents report ‘mini-earthquake’ after sonic boom ‘shocked’ homes

The people of the Northwest felt the earth moving this morning – the tornado that hovered over their heads made a screeching sound.

Locals said they feared a “small earthquake” had hit the area, with some saying their homes “shaken” as a loud explosion rang out.

But the British Geological Survey said no earthquakes had been recorded.

The explosive noise was later revealed as the cyclone sped at supersonic speed off the coast of Southport, Merseyside.

BAE Systems said the plane was part of flight tests alongside the RAF and apologized for any alarm it caused.

Experts at BGS have revealed for the first time that the sound may have been caused by an aircraft.

“We have signals that may be consistent with an audio event,” an official said.

“British Aerospace confirmed it had airborne aircraft at the time and two RAF aircraft, but could not confirm whether any of them were hypersonic at this time.”

Flightradar24, which monitors air traffic, shows that an Air Force jet was moving through the area at the time the sound was heard.

The website revealed that several warplanes were then seen flying towards the North Sea.

Among those in the air at the time was the Boeing Poseidon MRA1 (P-8A), which flew over Guernsey and the English Channel after taking off from Inverness, Scotland, PlymouthLive reports.

The aircraft is a multi-role maritime patrol vessel armed with sensors and weapon systems for anti-submarine warfare. In addition, it is used in surveillance, search and rescue missions.

It was also seen over South Devon and the Torbay area before heading towards Wales.

However, the mystery was resolved this afternoon when BAE confirmed that the hurricane was operating in an offshore area.

They added that the sound may be transmitted due to “climatic conditions”.

The aircraft was part of the Typhoon development programme, which is part of the UK’s national security programme.

Residents of Merseyside, Greater Manchester, Cheshire and Lancashire heard the blast around 11am.

A man who lives in Southport told the Liverpool Echo: “There was a loud bang that shook the whole house violently.

“We went upstairs to see if a wardrobe or something had fallen but we couldn’t see anything out of place.

“When we saw other people talking about it on Facebook, we thought it might be a cause of the crack, but then I saw a plane flying around Southport at a similar time, so now I’m wondering if it was a boom.”

The newspaper said that others in the area feared exposure to a small earthquake.

The plane took off at supersonic speed off Merseyside.

“Was there a small earthquake? My house and windows shook,” said one of the women.

Another resident said, “It looked and felt like two heartbeats just before 11 am.”

“The ceiling of the workshop was shaking and there was a very deep gurgle. The interior doors of the house seemed to be on the go,”

A third said, “I wondered what the hell it was, it looked like someone was kicking doors inside.”

It comes amid fears that Europe is only hours away from an all-out war in Ukraine.

Russia has more than 100,000 soldiers massed near the border with its eastern European neighbors.

US intelligence agencies expect the Kremlin chiefs to order an attack on Ukraine at 1 a.m. local time tomorrow.

This means there is a lot of military activity in UK skies, even though the government says British troops will not be sent to fight.
