SunLive – Chch earthquake: Claims still unstable 11 years later

On the 11th anniversary of the Christchurch earthquake, an attorney dealing with pending insurance claims said the city still had a long way to go.

A 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck Canterbury at 12.51pm on February 22, 2011, killing 185 people.

More than half a million claims have been filed with the earthquake commission and private insurance companies as a result, and many homeowners still struggle to work through unsettled claims.

A number of their clients in this situation are frustrated and impatient, says Andrew Ferguson, director of Shine Lawyers.

“It’s an incredibly stressful situation for anyone in a situation of uncertainty.

“A lot of people who still have to deal with insurance companies and the EQC assumed that this would be done really well 11 years ago.”

Ferguson feels that the struggles of these homeowners have been forgotten over time.

“I think a lot of countries probably think things are sorted out.”

Ferguson says it’s impossible to know when the city will be able to move past these outstanding issues.

“I don’t want to predict what will happen because every time I get it wrong, it just seems to get worse.”

The chief executive of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce, Lynn Watson, is proud of the progress the city has made, despite great adversity.

“We really have a resilient, agile and supportive community that is well positioned for the future,” Watson says.

“We didn’t start rebuilding 11 years ago, we had an earthquake and for two years after that, the ground was still shaking.”

Watson says the pandemic has put enormous pressure on local businesses, which have invested heavily in bringing life back to downtown.

“Just as we start to turn around and take back this vibrant central city, Covid is coming along.”

The pandemic has also prevented a civil service to mark the anniversary, and locals are encouraged to celebrate the day individually instead.

A range of options have been proposed to identify the earthquake individually, including observing a minute of silence at 12.51 pm, the time it occurred.

On behalf of the city, Mayor Lianne Dalziel will lay a wreath at the Oi Manawa Earthquake National Monument, and the names of the 185 people who died will be read aloud.

In a statement, Dalziel said that festivities in the future will be scaled back, regardless of important milestones.
