At least 11 people killed in Indonesia earthquake as rescuers search for rubble

At least 11 people have been confirmed dead in the two days since the powerful earthquake in Indonesia.

A devastating natural disaster hit the island of Sumatra on Friday morning, prompting more than 13,000 people to flee their homes.

Officials know 388 people were injured but rescuers are still working on the rubble of the more than 14,000 buildings that were destroyed.

It is believed that other villagers were buried under tons of mud caused by the earthquake to retreat from the surrounding hills.

About 42 people are receiving treatment for serious injuries.

Of the 11 people declared dead in the disaster, six were killed in Basaman and five in neighboring West Basaman.

The earthquake measured 6.2 on the Richter scale – strong enough to cause very severe tremors, although not strong enough to trigger a tsunami.

Generally, tsunamis need an earthquake of about 7.5 magnitude.

However, the earthquakes were so severe that they were felt as far away as Singapore and Malaysia.

Indonesia, with a population of about 270 million, is frequently exposed to natural disasters including earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and tsunamis.

This is because of its location on the Ring of Fire – an arc of volcanoes and fault lines across the Pacific Ocean.

The last major earthquake in Indonesia was just over a year ago – last January.

The earthquake, with a magnitude of 6.2, killed at least 105 people and injured nearly 6,500.

More than 92,000 people were displaced after it hit Mamugo and Majin districts in West Sulawesi province.

A powerful earthquake and tsunami in the Indian Ocean in 2004 killed nearly 230,000 people in more than a dozen countries, mostly in Indonesia.
