The mysterious underground moves caused the road to shatter as if it had been hit by an earthquake.

Repair work on a section of B4069 near Lynham in Wiltshire could cost millions to repair, with huge cracks in the tarmac.

Wiltshire Council says the road has been closed since February 17 – but some drivers are still trying to use it, according to police.

The earthquake-like damage resulted from unexplained underground movements which will now be investigated.

Locals claim that the subsidence has gotten worse over the past year and a landslide is inevitable.

Wiltshire Council said it is now awaiting a report from geotechnical professionals before taking further action.

Dr Mark McClelland, a cabinet member for the Wiltshire Transport Council, told BBC radio station Wiltshire: “It could cost hundreds of thousands or it could run into the millions. [to fix].

“There’s a lot of damage down the road. It could total up to 12 months. It’s not something that can be resolved in a matter of days or weeks.”

Dr McClelland added that in some places, the road was “crooked” up to four feet, and she described what looked like an earthquake was accurate.

“The groundwork has slipped and we want to understand why this is happening,” he added.

“The police have made it very clear that it is very dangerous for motorists to ignore the signs.”

The noticeable damage is also affecting local businesses, with local pubs such as Peterborough Arms suffering heavy losses in bookings since the closure.
