The family of a 1-year-old boy fatally shot by Mississippi police says goodbye A temporary memorial for Cohen Wiley, a 1-year-old boy killed in an officer-involved shooting outside a Walmart in Senatobia, Miss. Andrea Morales to NBC News

Before the protests, before the demands for justice, before he was placed inside a small coffin with a stuffed Bluey, the family looked forward to sharing simple moments with Cohen Wiley, who was just months away from his second birthday and whom he named after his maternal grandmother.

Fishing trips with grandpa. Get to know his cousins. First day of school.

Those dreams ended June 14 in a Walmart parking lot in Senatobia, Mississippi, when 1-year-old Wiley was shot by police responding to a shoplifting call. Thirteen days later, after his mother watched him take his last breath, she entered a rural church in Mississippi to say goodbye to her infant son.

During Friday’s visitation, dozens sat in the pews of West Gilmore Church of Christ in Senatobia. As mourners spoke quietly, children’s songs were interspersed with traditional gospel songs.

Standing outside wearing a T-shirt bearing Cohen’s face, Renae Jones, who grew up in Senatobia and knows one of the boy’s grandmothers, said she once recalled her friendly relations with black officers. But she said a troubling change has occurred in the department over the years.

“Senatopia might be a good place,” she said. “It just needs the right people running it.”
