US-Iran trade strikes, Venezuela earthquake death toll mounts: Weekend recap

President Donald Trump warned that the United States may be forced to return to war as a series of escalating tit-for-tat strikes with Iran continued through Sunday, threatening to undermine peace efforts between the two countries.

Bahrain and Kuwait faced new Iranian attacks, hours after US Central Command said it had struck multiple targets in response to “ongoing aggression” against commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

He added: “US aircraft have just struck Iranian missile and drone storage sites and coastal radar sites, for violating the ceasefire agreement, again!” Trump posted Saturday on Truth Social.

Senator Roger Marshall, Republican of Kansas, said on the “Meet the Press” program that the war between the United States and Iran had moved into a phase he called “the cleansing process” in the wake of the recent strikes.

Tehran, which has committed to reopening the vital waterway, has insisted that ships follow a specific route near its coast, but many ships are instead choosing to transit through the waters of the United Arab Emirates and Oman.

Meanwhile, Hezbollah rejected the US-brokered security agreement between Israel and Lebanon, describing it as a “surrender” to Israel.

Those dreams ended June 14 in a Walmart parking lot in Senatobia, Mississippi, when 1-year-old Wiley was shot by police responding to a shoplifting call. Thirteen days later, after his mother watched him take his last breath, she entered a rural church in Mississippi to say goodbye to her infant son.

During Friday’s visitation, dozens sat in the pews of West Gilmore Church of Christ in Senatobia. As mourners spoke quietly, children’s songs were interspersed with traditional gospel songs.

Standing outside wearing a T-shirt bearing Cohen’s face, Renae Jones, who grew up in Senatobia and knows one of the boy’s grandmothers, said she once recalled her friendly relations with black officers. But she said a troubling change has occurred in the department over the years.

“Senatopia might be a good place,” she said. “It just needs the right people running it.”
