Magnitude 5.0 earthquake strikes Alaska

A massive 5.0-magnitude earthquake hit Alaska this afternoon after the state was hit by the world’s largest earthquake in 2021.

The earthquake was recorded around 1:30 pm local time. No earthquake was reported.

The quake reportedly occurred 33 miles southwest of Shimia Island, and 52 miles southeast of Attu Station, according to the Alaska Seismological Center (AEC).

The US National Tsunami Warning Center issued a statement saying that there is no danger of a tsunami as a result of this earthquake.

There were no reports of injuries or damage.

In 2021, Alaska recorded a magnitude 8.2 earthquake, the largest in the United States in 50 years, according to the AEC’s 2021 Seismic Review Report.

This earthquake occurred on July 28 at 10:15 pm local time. It originated offshore Alaska Peninsula.

A tsunami warning was issued after the earthquake.

Alaska Earthquake Center seismologist Leah Jardine worked on the 2021 earthquake report and said there weren’t as many aftershocks as experts predicted.

However, aftershocks can still be felt from the 7.1-magnitude earthquake that occurred near Anchorage in 2018.

“It still produces earthquakes that people feel, including magnitude 5, which could be the new normal for this region,” Garden told the Alaska News Source.

Garden says that aftershocks from the 2018 earthquake could last into 2023 or even 2024.

In 2022, more than 5,800 earthquakes were reported in Alaska, according to the AEC.
