Big Scout Report: San Jose Earthquakes

Big Scout Report: San Jose Earthquakes

After a 4-0 win over the Vancouver Whitecaps last Saturday, Columbus Crew began en route to the team’s first away game in 2022 to face the San Jose Earthquakes. There has been plenty of talk from head coach Caleb Porter about improving Crew’s on-road record in 2022, given that the team has won just seven away games since 2018, including no away wins in 2020.

Thus, the Black and Gold will be looking to set off well on the road at their first opportunity this year. The Quakes present a great opportunity to do so, as they seem to be forgotten both on and off the field with many questions surrounding the club as early as 2022. In addition, San Jose lost more matches (7) at home than the team. last year (5).

Here’s a look at what to expect from “Quakes” and how the crew can build on their great start last weekend.

About San Jose Earthquakes:

Scored: 0-1-0 (0 points)

Top scorer: Javier “Chauves” Lopez (1)

Co-Captain: Christian Espinosa (1)

Player to watch: Gameiro Montero

Crew fans will be very familiar with Montero thanks to his two-year stint with Eastern Conference rivals, Philadelphia Union, from 2020-22. In this off-season, Montero was transferred to San Jose for $250,000 in general allocation money. The 28-year-old Cape Verdean international will play a more prominent role in the 2022 tournament and was among San Jose’s most vibrant players in last week’s match.

Known for his skill at handling the ball in tight spaces and his speed, Montero fits well in his seismic attack plan. Last week Monteiro played as a left wing attacking midfielder last year with a 3-4-3 formation. This spot allows him to access positions to pose questions to his outside opponents and linebackers, as well as his midfield players.

Although not featured in the stats for the first week, Montero is likely to pose a threat throughout the year due to earthquakes. The crew will need to be well organized in order to keep Montero at bay on Saturday.

How to play San Jose:

San Jose coach Matias Almeida has made a name for himself in MLS thanks to his incredibly unique playing style. The Argentine is a student of compatriot Marcelo Bielsa and has prepared his team to play in a remarkably similar way to the recently sacked Leeds United boss. With Quakes, Almeyda uses a high-energy, man-to-man defense system to try to thwart his opponents. Generally, its players are responsible for a particular opponent for the majority of the match.

Although this match is generally based on positional confrontations, it is not uncommon to see Earthquakes players pulled around the field into unconventional defensive positions thanks to this technology. Of course, there are exceptions to this, but the concept remains one of the most diverse and intense game systems in the league.

Last week against the New York Red Bulls, San Jose seemed to be waiting for certain signs to put pressure on. This is likely due to the direct nature of the RBNZ and it was an attempt to keep players in good positions to win the first and second balls after the New York long ball.

This week against The Crew, expect the Quakes to apply much higher pressure on the field in an effort to recover the ball near the offensive goal as well as disrupt Columbus’s rhythm of possession. When San Jose gets the ball back, look for them to try and play forward as fast as possible in an effort to get behind the crew’s defensive line. Earthquakes often try to do this with their “up, backward, through” gameplay. This pattern refers to a field pass to an attacking player, who returns the ball to a fellow supporter before a through ball is played to another attacker running behind the backline. Although a relatively simple concept, when implemented it can be very dangerous. The crew’s defense line should be well aware of this pattern and will need help from their midfielders and attackers to block the original ball on the field as much as possible on Saturday.

How the crew can win:

Black & Gold has a good chance of getting off to a good start on the road as well as trying to stay on top of the Eastern Conference with this match. While it certainly isn’t an easy game, the crew will be satisfied with the team’s chances heading into this match and should look to capitalize on some of the uncertainty and chaos surrounding the earthquakes early in the season. Despite the uniqueness of Almeida’s style, Porter noted some similarities between last week’s opponent in Vancouver and this week’s San Jose.

Due to the man-to-man nature of Almeida style, individual ability is of great importance when playing earthquakes. Thus, incredibly talented players on the ball such as Lukas Zelarajan, Darlington Ngbe and Alexandru Matan can be incredibly useful against San Jose. These players (and all Crew attackers) can use their ability on the ball to overpower their individual control and cause disorganization in Earthquakes’ defense by asking other players to make their mark to stop them with the ball.

Columbus could also use some of the team’s physically gifted players to wreak havoc against San Jose. Incredibly fast players like newcomer Yaw Yeboah or Luis Diaz can bypass their mark to get behind the line of defense. Gyasi Zardes and Miguel Berry can use the combination of size and power to get past a defender and finish off unnoticed chances in the penalty area as well.

The bottom line is that every Crew Striker needs to be prepared, prepared and able to try and beat their Marker in a 1v1 match. This is especially important for this match as the Seismic Unit will likely be missing key players in defense for this match.

In addition to the importance of the crew striker being able to overcome his individual fingerprint, there is also a tactical area where the Lions and Golds can look to exploit last week’s earthquakes, and Columbus was routinely able to stand behind the Whitecaps defensive line. Their ability and willingness to change the attack point once they enter the offensive third, specifically with the wingers. The Crew was often able to play the ball to either Derrick Etienne Jr. Or Yeboah feet with their backs to goal.

When this happened, Yeboah and Etienne immediately began to shift the point of attack to the other side. This led to Etienne’s goal in the first half as well as a Yeboah chance that almost turned in a little earlier. This was incredibly effective as it took advantage of Vancouver’s three-man defense line. By playing with the wing foot, one of the three main defenders is formed. When this happens, the other two defenders slide to cover behind the stepped defender. Thus, there is an open space on the other side of the field.

Finally, the crew will need to organize quickly when the team loses the ball. This is a common theme for Black and Gold that will be referenced throughout the year. Thanks to Black & Gold’s possession style, the defenders had possession of the ball in the first few seconds after losing the ball again. Teams like Earthquakes, who are looking to attack quickly and straight after winning the ball, will view this as a potential weakness for Columbus.

In order to keep San Jose at bay, the crew’s defensive line will need to quickly regain their defensive shape after losing the ball. Additionally, attackers with black and gold surrounding the ball will need to quickly counter pressure on the ball and pressure that prevents Seismic from playing forward quickly.

If Columbus could do both of those things well, the Black and Gold would force the Quakes to overpower them by creating chances while in possession of the ball for too long, which they’re not good at. Look for Black & Gold to focus extra on this part of the game this week in order to be successful.
