BMKG attacks someone who claims to have predicted the Sumatra earthquake

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency’s (BMKG) Earthquake and Tsunami Mitigation Coordinator, Daryono, tweeted on March 4 that a social media account claimed to have predicted an earthquake from the Sumatra Fault based on cloud formations .

Dariono said in his tweet, “How do you know clouds and earthquakes [are related?] Please do not further destabilize an earthquake-stricken community,” he wrote on Twitter, “An earthquake is a scientific process and has no ties to clouds. “

He attached his tweet with a screenshot of the initial social media account that posted the earthquake prediction.

He then cited the United States Geological Survey (USGS) which had already debunked the myths surrounding earthquake predictions, and noted that the prediction by the respective social media account fits with the USGS’s description of the unsubstantiated earthquake prediction claims.

The USGS explains on its website that earthquake “predictions” are not based on scientific evidence, and that earthquakes are part of a scientific process. For example, it shows that earthquakes have nothing to do with clouds, bodily pains, or slugs and do not specify the three elements required for forecasting; Namely, date, time, location, and size.

Predictions (by non-scientists) usually start circulating around social media when something thought to be a harbinger of an earthquake occurs in the near future. The so-called precursors are often a swarm of small earthquakes, increased amounts of radon in local waters, unusual behavior of animals, increased magnitudes in medium-sized events, or a medium-sized event rare enough to indicate It might be an omen.

Unfortunately, most of these precursors often occur without being followed by an earthquake, so true prediction is not possible.

Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless.
