UF Health Hands doctor heads to Ukraine to provide medical care to civilians

Gainesville, Florida (WCJB) – With millions of people fleeing Ukraine, Dr. Riley Jones with UF Health Shands was on his way to help.

“A lot of times it feels like I’m only making a tiny little drip, but I think about it, drip rivers are made,” Jones said.

For more than 10 years, Dr. Riley Jones has provided medical care to people in war-torn areas.

“For me I’m usually there for a month or two at a time,” he said.

Jones works in the global health division of UF Health Shands, and is now about to be on his way to Ukraine.

He said his trip to Haiti after an earthquake opened his eyes to global health.

“Seeing the work we were trying to do after the Haiti earthquake and then realizing the long-term implications of that work.”

Jones is part of MedGlobal, a non-governmental organization that provides free health care services to people in crisis-affected areas.

He said he expected to treat people suffering from the fallout from what he described as the usual tactics of the Russian military.

“They’ll double-tap and that’s where they’ll bomb the situation, wait a few minutes, let the rescuers in, and bomb it again to get the message home,” he said.

Jones heads to Ukraine on Wednesday.
