The Miyagi School which was burnt down in the tsunami has been revived as a memorial

Ishinomaki, Miyagi Prefecture – The school building here that was destroyed in a combination of water fires during the 2011 tsunami has been reconstructed to become a disaster memorial.

The former Kadonowaki Elementary School is the only preserved structure among the buildings destroyed by the fires caused by the tsunami following the Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11, 2011.

The memorial was shown to reporters and residents on February 27, and will be available to the public in April.

“We like to give a lesson that escaping to the upper floors during a tsunami does not necessarily work in the event of a fire,” said exhibition curator Hiroko Takahashi, who is also a senior official with the Ishinomaki City Disaster Remembrance Department.

One kilometer from the sea, the three-storey school building was flooded to a height of 1.8 meters and caught fire after being hit by burning debris carried by the tsunami.

The 224 students had fled before the fire broke out, but seven others who left earlier died after being swept away by the tsunami.

The school is now so degraded that an outside corridor has been created alongside the structure for viewing.

A private room behind the building displays display panels and videos showing the children’s and teachers’ stories along with information about the devastation of Ishinomaki.

According to surveys, four years after the disaster, half of the residents of Ishinomaki wanted to demolish the school building. But from 2018 to 2019, most residents wanted it to be fully preserved.

The municipality decided to retain only the central part of the 107-meter-tall building as a monument, citing maintenance and management costs.

Nine facilities in the three prefectures of the Tohoku region most affected by the earthquake and tsunami have applied for the Reconstruction Agency’s Memorial Preservation Support Program.

Kadonowaki Elementary School is the last school to open to the public after its renovation as a monument under the program.
