Philadelphia Union 2-0 San Jose Earthquakes – Philly Football Page

Only the toughest (see: Frozen) fanatics of the Union braved near-freezing temperatures and blistering winds Saturday night to witness their hometown boys in the blue give Jim Curtin his 100th Major League Soccer win, as they defeated the San Jose Earthquakes 2-0.
first half
Al-Ittihad played the first half in the way of the wind.
The first chances of the match came in the fourth minute after a good cross pass by Cristian Espinosa from San Jose on the one hand and a through pass from Kai Wagner to Sergio Santos on the other. In both cases, their respective defenses held strong and the opportunities disappeared.
Defense was the theme of the match as well, with the League pressing the entire field of play and the Quakes running their man’s defense scheme, often under a defensive three-quarter shell.
In the 14th minute, the Union press forced an excellent spin with Nate Harrell on the front foot. Dribbled by the first man and played by Santos at the top of the penalty area, Daniel Gazdag – the midfielder returned the ball to the Brazilian – but the resulting shot veered high.
More pressure in the 18th minute from Corey Burke put Al Ittihad in the final third as San Jose scrambled. Once again, the visiting defense regrouped and imposed a corner. The ball that followed was headed to the far post by Harrell and brilliantly saved by Marcinkowski (who had a really strong game), while the loose opportunity afterwards was snatched away by the Al Ittihad right-back.
In the 23rd minute, Al Ittihad finally opened up to San Jose’s constant pressure. Santos was on the wing, edging out the helpless Jackson Yoel. With a win on his leg, Burke’s clever run left him alone in place – Santos’ pass didn’t miss and the hosts were ahead.
In the 30th minute, Santos should have doubled it. He won the ball high and it fell to the feet of Gazdag, who immediately played it. Although the boys had numbers and the attacker was running free for the goalkeeper, his right foot failed to do so. Just a moment later, Al Ittihad qualified again – this time with a header from Kai Wagner and a cross from Santos. Gazdag’s first touch was a bit heavy and Marsinovsky went up and took the ball off his foot.
Santos had another half-chance in the 39th minute, slipping away as Al Ittihad pressed on the other side of the field. He was a bit off-center by the time I found him with the overturned ball and his shot was predictable.
The first half was nothing if not chaotic, with the pressure of the two teams causing the other to suffer poor touches, open space and football from end to end. The Federation had half a dozen chances but only one goal – and plenty of room for improvement.
the other half
Despite the wind and the lead, Al-Ittihad almost equalized in the first minute of the half. A cross was cut from Quakes before being buried in the net only by a vertical recovery from Wagner. A minute later, another San Jose chance deflected, and the ball rebounded through a throwing line—but not fouling—the boys in blue.
His selfless rebound and Martinez victory put the ball at Gleesens’ feet in the 53rd minute. He split the visiting lines and found Gazdag in 3v2. It was Burke who received the ball on the right but the first touch took him too far – his cross died at the foot of the defence.
Al-Ittihad missed its chances left and right until the 56th minute when San Jose gifted a golden goal: a penalty kick. After the ball hit the Coix defender’s outstretched arm, Gazdag climbed into the spot in front of River End and softly shot Panenka into the back of the net.
It was a quiet, collected, and truly gritty ending, second to him in many games – each one bluffing in its own way.
In the 67th minute, top scorer Burke decided he could not continue. He got injured a few times already that night but finally had enough and was replaced by Paxten Aaronson in a 4-3-2-1 fixed it. Just moments later, Gezdag was back in goal again after a veritable clamor from Santos. But Gazdag’s first touch flattened him and the ball came out. He jumped to try to save the opportunity but was punched in the guard by the San Jose guard for his efforts.
The game kept getting worse because San Jose didn’t give up. Al Ittihad gave a good chance in the penalty area in the 82nd minute, but not before entering the ball on several dangerous points. After just a few moments, the Federation looked like they were back again, but the opportunity was lost due to a host of bad touches – not to mention that the flag was raised.
Al-Ittihad increased its intensity in the last minutes, its journalistic streak is higher and its renewed commitment to the challenges. They won’t let the game slip away. A break in the 88th minute had the fingerprints of a coffin nail but was undone again by a poor touch with the last ball – the same was true for the 97th minute chance from some great Aaronson defense, but again Santos was just too wide for a good look. .
Like most early season games, the Etihad defense was cornered but the attack still needed time to iron out. Never mind, they controlled their visitors and took the entire spoils of the game.
Three points not Mikael Aher? His first match was strange but bewildering and fans were looking forward to his first home appearance. Although the weather appears to be home to the dane, his name was not on the team paper due to what has been described as a “narrow tetra”. Although the Union strikers were threatening, they could have used a pair of shooting boots and maybe the final 6-0. Jose Martinez was omnipresent on both sides of the ball for union, connecting lines, putting down several San Jose set-pieces, and generally neutralizing the visiting creative players. It wasn’t perfect, but given the Federation’s tendency to vertical, the Venezuelan often seemed to be the only link between the backline and the attack. He is enjoying this opportunity. It is said that Olivier Mbezzo had a good week of training. Never mind – Nate Harrell has played himself a good second in a row under unusual circumstances. He has already surpassed Mbaizu in attack, taking advantage of his strengths and keeping things simple. In defense, he also outsmarts him, jumps in passing lanes, holds ground, and communicates with his teammates – all while still learning. Don’t expect to see Mbezu on the 11th anytime soon. line up
