Tsunami-hit cities eager to accept Ukrainians to repay the favor

RIKUZENTAKATA, Iwate Prefecture – This stricken city is offering to lay the red carpet for Ukrainians fleeing the Russian invasion of their homeland to bring back the kindness shown to the world when it was devastated by a massive earthquake and tsunami in 2011.

Mayor Futoshi Toba proposed the gesture during a March 12 meeting with Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, who was visiting him as part of a tour of the three prefectures hardest hit by the tsunami caused by the 9.0-magnitude Great East Japan Earthquake.

“When the disaster flattened us, people all over the world offered their help to us and we remain forever grateful,” Toba Kishida said. “We are very keen to receive Ukrainian refugees.”

Takuya Tasu, governor of Iwate, who also attended the meeting, said the prefectural government felt the same way.

Kishida responded that he would consider the proposal in a positive way.

Kishida told reporters after the meeting that the city of Ishinomaki in neighboring Miyagi Prefecture, which was also devastated by the disaster, expressed a similar wish.

“The central government will think about how best to accommodate the Ukrainian people after meeting their needs and working alongside local municipalities,” Kishida said.

On March 2, the prime minister said Japan would accept Ukrainian refugees to show solidarity after phone talks with Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki.
