Michael Fowler Center for Earthquake Hazard Notice until further assessment

The Michael Fowler Center is home to the symphony orchestra and the main stage for the performers, but delays in reassessing the building’s earthquake condition mean it will have to display the earthquake exposure notice.

The Michael Fowler Center – the capital’s main theater for performers – is set to receive an earthquake exhibition poster this week, despite its weaknesses already being remedied.

However, the condition will not affect events or employees using the building.

A letter to Wellington City Council members Tuesday morning from council property manager Peter Brennan said that despite the notice, council engineers did not believe the building was earthquake-prone.

However, further documentation was required to verify the building’s seismic condition, and this was a “major work” that was expected to take “several months”, in the meantime the building would have to display a notice.

A Detailed Seismic Assessment (DSA) conducted in 2014 gave a rating of 50-60 percent of the New Building Standard (NBS) and recommended targeted reinforcement work, which is now completed.

“Following the completion of these works, our engineers confirmed that they had no reason to believe that the building should be classified as earthquake-prone,” Brennan wrote.

“On this basis, the Board, as the owner of the building, decided that it was suitable for employees and tenants.”

Engineers were assigned to conduct a new assessment.

However, due to the busy construction sector and the complexity of the building, this will not be completed for up to six months.
