Jamaica organizes earthquake simulation exercise in Montego Bay

The Jamaica Municipal Corporation of Western Saint James Parish, through its Disaster Preparedness, Risk Mitigation and Safety Committee, will organize a major earthquake simulation exercise on March 28 across Montego Bay II.

This was announced by Tamoy Sinclair, St. James’ Disaster Preparedness Coordinator, during a recent meeting of the Foundation’s Disaster Preparedness, Risk Mitigation and Safety Committee.

The simulation exercise will be conducted in partnership with key stakeholders, including the Department of Tourism, the Jamaica Hotel and Tourism Association (JHTA), the Jamaica Fire Brigade (JFB), the Jamaica Police Force (JCF), and the Montego Bay Chamber of Commerce and Industry. (MBCCI) and Jamaica Information Service (JIS).

According to Sinclair, the exercises are intended to assess the preparedness and response of businesses and city government agencies to a major earthquake.

“The aim of the exercise is to ensure that we can test the communication and coordination skills of agencies in responding to such a large-scale event, which will be an earthquake that will affect everyone,” she said.

She said the exercises will take place in the context of a crisis and major damage to infrastructure in the resort town due to a strong earthquake.

She explained that while the earthquake drills will be carried out independently by entities across the resort, the main simulation exercise organized by the Disaster Preparedness, Risk Mitigation and Safety Committee will be held at the Jewels Grande Resort hotel in the city.

“For that facility, we might have actors simulating injuries, calling first responders, who would come and stay,” she noted.

“We hope to get as many participants as possible to see how individual workstations can test their internal disaster risk management plans,” Sinclair said.

“The simulation will give the business community the opportunity to test their emergency procedures,” she stressed.

After the exercise, Sinclair noted that the municipal corporation will help companies with loopholes in their disaster management plan to strengthen and simplify the document.
