Since Saturday, the island of São Jorge in the Azores has recorded more than 1,100 earthquakes, most of them of low intensity.

Only 63 residents felt, prompting authorities to activate an emergency plan as experts assess the seismic crisis.

Most of the seismic activity occurred in an area between the village of Vilas, in the south of the island, and Vaga do Ovidor, on the northern coast, according to Roy Marques, director of the Azores Volcanic Information and Monitoring Center (Sevilla).
