Toyota suspends production after the earthquake

Toyota Motor Corporation announced over the weekend that it has halted production at most of its auto assembly plants in Japan for three days this week in the wake of the powerful earthquake that hit the country.

A 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck off the northeastern coast of Japan last Wednesday night, sending powerful shock waves as far away as Tokyo, temporarily cutting power to millions of homes, businesses and even an express train.

It hit the same area, around the same time of the year, as the massive 2011 Fukushima 9.0 earthquake that caused a devastating tsunami. Recent reports from Japan have reported that workers are still working to clean reactors at a nuclear power plant that was partially destroyed by the massive waves that followed that earthquake while displaced locals from areas affected by radioactivity have just been allowed to return to what remains of their homes, businesses and villages. This time, there were no reports of damage to nuclear facilities.

The 2011 earthquake also affected the auto industry’s suppliers. For a while after that there was a worldwide shortage of a certain chemical used in metallic car paints.

The latest earthquake has suspended production at 17 of Toyota’s 28 domestic production lines, including facilities operated by Hino and Daihatsu, for three days out of the day, with another line shutting down for only one day. The suspension is expected to affect the production of about 25,000 cars.

“Due to the parts shortage caused by suppliers affected by the earthquake, additional adjustments will be made to production processes at some plants in Japan,” Toyota said in a statement.

The company had just announced further production cuts for March and the second quarter of 2022 due to the global shortage of semiconductors.

Local reports indicated that some Toyota factories suffered some damage, but there were no reports of injuries to workers.

Semiconductor maker Renesas Electronics was forced to halt operations at its three facilities in the region due to the earthquake but said it was looking to return factories to normal production later this week.

Subaru was also forced to halt operations at two assembly plants for two days due to supply chain disruptions, while the impact on the Nissan and Honda plants has so far been minimal.
