A 6.7-magnitude earthquake hit Taiwan, causing a bridge to collapse and shaking buildings

An earthquake measuring 6.7 on the Richter scale jolted the coast of Taiwan early Wednesday morning and woke people from their sleep, injuring one person and injuring a half-built bridge in the east of the island.

Taiwan experiences earthquakes regularly as it lies near the intersection of two tectonic plates. No tsunami warning is issued unless a 7.0-magnitude earthquake is recorded.

The USGS initially estimated the 1:41 a.m. quake (1741 GMT Tuesday) to be a magnitude of 6.9, but lowered it to 6.6 before finally evaluating it as 6.7.

It also adjusted the depth from 10 kilometers (six miles) to 24 kilometers.

The quake hit Taiwan’s east coast – near the island’s scenic tourist city Hualien – but was felt across most of the island.

The alerts issued by the government sent loud beeps into cell phones, and social media was lit up with people posting their reactions when they woke up.

“The chandelier on my ceiling shook for more than three minutes and did not stop,” local reporter Zhao Li wrote on Facebook.

“It vibrates so hard, it scares people to death,” he said in an accompanying video.

An AFP reporter also felt the building in Taipei’s Zhongshan District shake a few minutes after 1:41 a.m.

On Wednesday, local media published footage from grocery stores that showed objects flying off shelves when the earthquake struck.

Taiwan’s National Fire Agency confirmed on its official Facebook page that a man in southern Taitung county was hit by glass and was sent to hospital.

A bridge under construction in Hualien also collapsed, the agency said, but there were no casualties because traffic is not allowed in the area.

Known for its beaches and hiking spots, Hualien experienced a deadly 6.4-magnitude earthquake in 2018 that left 17 dead and 300 injured.

“Please do not panic if there are aftershocks and we urge residents to prepare for disaster prevention,” the provincial government said in a statement on its official Facebook page.

Chen Kuo Chang, head of the Taiwan Meteorological Bureau’s seismic center, said about 150 aftershocks, most of them below 3.6, after the initial quake.

Earthquakes of magnitude 6.0 or greater can be deadly, although a lot depends on where they occur and at what depth.

The last time Taiwan was hit by an earthquake of similar magnitude was in January when a 6.2-magnitude earthquake hit its east coast. There were no extensive damages or injuries.
