A strong earthquake recorded by the USGS as a M6.4 struck the South Sandwich Islands area at 10:26 UTC on July 11, 2026. The agency reported a depth of 46 km (28.6 miles). EMSC reports the same size and depth.

The epicenter was located 2,390 kilometers (1,485 mi) southwest of Edinburgh Seven Seas (population 271), Tristan da Cunha, Saint Helena, and 2,448 kilometers (1,521 mi) east of Ushuaia (population 56,825), Argentina.

There is no threat of a tsunami from this earthquake.

The US Geological Survey issued a green alert for shaking-related deaths and economic losses. There is a low possibility of casualties and damage.

In general, residents of this area reside in structures that are a mixture of weak and earthquake-resistant buildings. The predominant weak building types are adobe with concrete beams and unreinforced brick with concrete floor construction.
