Alexandra Church receives strength from earthquake

The Church of St. Enoch has stood the test of time and will continue to do so thanks to recent works.

Built in 1877, this 145-year-old stone building is subject to earthquake strengthening.

Alexandra Parish Minister Clyde Lauder Union Reverend Andrew Hawley said a building evaluation in 2016 determined the church had a low rating compared to new building standards.

“We didn’t have to close the doors right away, but we weren’t happy to live with that, seeing the way building prices keep going up – we wanted to start making it a building that’s going to be around for a long time,’ said Reverend Hawley.

The earthquakes were reinforced this month with the installation of seismic fixtures to strengthen the ends of the trusses, connecting the trusses to each other in a north, south, east and west direction.

A new fire alarm system, emergency lighting and exit signs were also installed.

The work will cost about $120,000 and was funded by grants from the Central Lakes Trust, Otago Community Trust, Presbyterian Synod of Otago and Southland, and the parishes of the church.

When St. Enoch’s Church was built, the Presbyterian Church was one of the most powerful denominations in the regions—at one time with about 2,000 members—and later merged with the Methodist Church to form the Diocese of the Union with a border stretching across Manohiricia, Ida Valley, and Ernchlog.

Today it covers only Alexandra and Clyde.

Mr. Howley said St Enoch’s Church was a milestone in Alexandra’s history, as well as in people’s lives.

He said, ‘This is a place where people baptize their children, it is a place where people abide by their faith, it is a place where people get married – I myself got married here.’

This is where we also bury our loved ones, so whether we are followers of the faith or not, it is a place with which many people relate and have strong emotional ties. ”

It’s a place we’d like to see here forever as a testament to those who have gone before, but also those who still believe in our world.
