Washington – If you can’t beat them, join them. That’s the thinking behind a new managed network service offered by satellite operator Intelsat that integrates geostationary satellites, SpaceX’s Starlink low-Earth orbit constellation and cellular broadband.

“A lot of our customers want to use Starlink and many have used it,” Don Clausen, Intelsat’s vice president of business development, told SpaceNews at last week’s Satellite 2022 conference.

He said satellite communications companies “spend a lot of time fighting among themselves over which orbits are better, and which band is better.” “If we’re really listening to our customers, what they’re saying is we kind of need you all.”

Intelsat purchases and resells Starlink terminals and services as part of a multi-layer, multi-orbit managed network that includes geostationary satcom and LTE connectivity. “We combine it into one portal so the user has a single interface,” Clausen said.

The company in November introduced a multi-orbit network using OneWeb but this star cluster is not yet able to provide global coverage.

“We’re still working with OneWeb, but they’re not as far off as Starlink,” Clausen said. “And our government users are testing Starlink terminals. So we really see that demand is there.”

Intelsat operates 52 geostationary satellites. Starting this month, users of the company’s Flex satcom service can choose a package with Starlink and Cell service. “Our government customers can get the whole package and only pay one bill,” Clausen said. Starlink has more than 2,000 operational satellites in orbit.

He said the main target customer for the service is the Department of Defense. He said military units can transport the entire network to the field in two large bags. One would have a geostationary Satcube, cables and a gate. The other will contain the Starlink terminal and cables, and they will all be connected to the gateway.

Clausen said setting up the Starlink is relatively easy. “I asked my daughter to do this two weeks ago at my house.”

He added that Starlink “has been fantastic to work with.” “And the feedback we got from customers about it is that it makes sense. Now the government and industry have to work together to figure out how to put this in the users’ hands.”
