MSF halts some operations in Haiti due to gang violence

Gang-related kidnappings in Haiti increased 180% last year, with 655 reported to police, according to a report by the United Nations Security Council.

Besides the violence, Haiti is also dealing with the slow ongoing investigations into the murder of President Jovenel Moise and the deadly earthquake in the south of the country last summer. (AFP)

The French charity Doctors Without Borders has announced the temporary suspension of its operations in a poor suburb of the Haitian capital, Port-au-Prince, due to the escalation of gang violence.

Thierry Jouveau, the director of Doctors Without Borders in Haiti, announced the temporary closure of a hospital in the Cite-Soleil neighborhood in a statement on Friday.

“We condemn all forms of obstruction and violence against medical services, our patients and our staff,” the statement said.

She added that the hospital would remain closed “unless security conditions are guaranteed.”

The security situation in Haiti has been deteriorating for months, with gangs exerting influence outside the slums of Port-au-Prince.

Gang-related kidnappings

The Caribbean country is also facing an increase in kidnappings: Five to ten people are kidnapped every day in Haiti, according to Haitian human rights organizations.

Site Soleil Hospital opened more than a decade ago and offers emergency care, although its service for serious burns has already been moved to another hospital in the capital due to a previous wave of violence.

Last August, MSF had to permanently close a hospital it had run for 15 years in the Martissant neighborhood, one of the most disadvantaged hospitals in Port-au-Prince.

The hospital was closed after police fled its local station and a wave of gang violence and looting forced thousands to flee their homes.
