Starbucks Reserve Roastery in Chelsea is going to be a union

NEW YORK – New York City’s flagship Starbucks store, the Chelsea-based “Reserve Roastery,” has officially voted to join a syndicate, making it the first Starbucks store in the city to do so and the tenth store nationwide.

In a statement, the Starbucks Workers Union said the establishment voted 46 in favor of the union, while 36 voted against the union on Friday. The cafe has about 100 employees.

The New York City store is one of three roasting locations in the state that unite with Starbucks United workers.

“I am proud to crown our efforts to make our workplace more democratic and equitable,” said Ley Kido, a Starbucks partner for nine years. “Society is a value close and dear to my heart and I am grateful and happy to be in solidarity with my colleagues.”

The announcement came just hours after Amazon’s Staten Island warehouse voted in favor of unions, making it the first Amazon facility in the state to join a union.

Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine tweeted a celebratory response and congratulated the workers, saying, “Second work earthquake in NYC today, this time in Manhattan!”

Employees at the roastery filed a union petition on February 10, originally asking for a vote on forming a union on March 3.

According to a statement from Starbucks Workers United, Starbucks delayed the process and created an “anti-union campaign.”

The union says it filed allegations of unfair labor practice against the company with the National Labor Relations Board on behalf of employees in Great Neck and Manhattan.

Starbucks could not be reached for comment.

The Starbucks Workers Union says more than 185 stores nationwide have filed union petitions.
