The US vice-president highlighted the “very unstable” situation in British politics.
US Vice President JD Vance said Britain’s constant change of prime minister shows the country’s political system is failing to meet people’s expectations, and warned British voters “crave” structural changes.
In an interview with the Sunday Times, Mr Vance said Britain’s problem did not lie with any one individual but reflected the deep disorder of the entire political system.
He cited the fact that Britain has continually changed prime ministers, from David Cameron, Theresa May, Boris Johnson, Liz Truss, Rishi Sunak to Keir Starmer.
“I see that Britain has had six prime ministers in just a few years. That shows me that there is something very unstable in British politics and that people are really hungry for meaningful structural change,” Mr Vance said.
He said Britain “has been abandoned by its leaders for a long time” and “could do a lot more than is being done now”.
Last month, Mr Keir Starmer announced he would resign as Prime Minister and leader of the Labor Party after less than two years in power, following an uprising within the party.
Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham is currently seen as a strong contender to replace Mr Starmer after winning the Makerfield by-election.
Mr. Vance said he did not know much about Mr. Burnham personally, but asserted that the United States would cooperate with anyone who led “one of America’s closest and most important allies.”
The US vice president’s statements were released on the 250th anniversary of the United States’ declaration of independence from Britain, as the United States continued to harshly criticize Britain for many months.
Recently, US President Donald Trump said Mr Starmer had “seriously failed” on immigration and energy issues.
Earlier this year, Mr Trump also said Mr Starmer was “not Winston Churchill”, when relations between the two sides deteriorated over Britain’s reluctance to support the war between the United States, Israel and Iran.
Mr Vance also spoke out forcefully after British teenager Henry Nowak was stabbed to death last month. He said the incident would not have happened if European elites “had resolutely opposed the policy of self-denial and the massive influx of migrants.”
In response, the British Prime Minister’s office accused these foreign politicians of attempting to “interfere” in British democracy and “incite division.”
The US vice-president rejected the idea that his critics showed hostility towards Britain.
He emphasized: “These things come from love and admiration…even if sometimes what we say can be provocative.”
Mr Vance also made a similar point at the Munich Security Conference last year, accusing European governments of opening the “gate” to migrants, while limiting free speech and weakening democratic standards.
