STEC will remain open after seismic review

The earthquake-prone situation at the Southern Trust Events Center will be resolved as part of the upcoming redevelopment project, and business will remain mostly business as usual until then.

A recent comprehensive engineering report showed the building’s overall rating to be less than 34%, which means it has been classified as earthquake prone.

The overall grade of a building depends on the lowest grade of any part of the structure. While the gyms, lobby, and hockey club rooms are below 34% of Importance Level 3, the main courts, entrance foyer, and front offices are all much higher.

Acting Director of Community Services Eric Barnes said that like thousands of other buildings across the country, STEC’s earthquake vulnerability status does not mean it is dangerous to occupy or use it.

“We take the safety of those who use our facilities very seriously. After this detailed evaluation, we are confident that the community can continue to use this popular sports facility safely until upgrade work begins.”

“Exposure to earthquakes does not mean that a building is not safe to use on a daily basis, it just means that it will not perform as well as a brand new building during a major earthquake.

“Under the earthquake-prone building provisions of the Building Code, the Council has 25 years to resolve these issues, but they will all be resolved much sooner as part of the Aorangi Park redevelopment project.

“In the lead up to the redevelopment, STEC will remain open and available for sports and events and tenants use as usual.

“The majority of users will not see any changes, but there will be some restrictions on the type of event that can be hosted in the lounge area.”

As part of the recent long-term plan, the board made the decision to undertake the development of Aorangi Park and Playground between 2023 and 2025.

This option means that the council will speed up the development of Aorangi Park and Playground, and move construction forward to 2023/24-2024/25.
